Sailing describes the locomotion of a sailing boat by using wind energy. Over many centuries sailing ships were of high importance in trading, transportation, warfare and fishing. By the end of the 19th century machine operated ships replaced sailing ships due to economic reasons. Nowadays, in industrialized countries sailing is mainly practiced as a leisure activity or as competitive sport. However, less developed countries still employ sailing boats to transport their goods. Over the time sailing boats in many different designs and sizes have developed. Generally one distinguishes between displacing sailing boats (mostly bigger and heavier boats) and planing boats (mostly smaller, lighter and faster boats). The types of boats range from a one-man dinghy, over yachts, catamarans and tall sailing ships for several dozens of crew members. For the different types of sailing boats, different sailing maneuvers have been developed, which have been brought to perfection in competitive sport. Therefore a general understanding of the construction of a boat and the physical basics of sailings is helpful. Depending on the size of the boat and the route, nautical foundations and knowledge about various statutory regulations and conventions are required.
